First Debut in Hainan, First Major Event of the New Year!
The Hainan Free Trade Port International Triathlon and the 2026 Haikou Triathlon World Cup will take place from March 21 to 22 along the Changdi Beach on Haise Road, Haikou. As the first-ever Triathlon World Cup event hosted in Hainan — and also China’s first international triathlon event of 2026 — this race will gather top-tier elite athletes from around the globe, delivering a spectacular showcase of speed, endurance and athletic passion. A press conference was held this morning (March 16) to announce the latest updates and highlights.
A Landmark Debut in the First Year of Hainan’s Free Trade Port Closure Operation
The Triathlon World Cup, certified as an A-level event by World Triathlon (WT), is one of the most prestigious and influential triathlon series in the world. This year marks the first time the event lands in Hainan and Haikou, becoming the very first international triathlon hosted during the inaugural year of the Hainan Free Trade Port’s customs closure operation. The successful hosting of the event will further showcase to the world Hainan’s openness, coastal charm, and vibrant sports culture.
Anil, Deputy Director of the Competitive Sports Division of the Hainan Provincial Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports, noted that this year’s event adopts the theme “Coconut Breeze, Ocean Rhythm, Passionate Challenge, Dynamic Hainan.” He highlighted that the event serves not only as a new window for the world to better understand Hainan and the Free Trade Port, but also as a key initiative to invigorate sports, culture and tourism consumption, thereby contributing to high-quality local economic development.
Notably, Hainan is also the birthplace of triathlon in China — the country’s first long-distance triathlon was organized by local enthusiasts in Sanya in 1987. Nearly 40 years later, the history and the World Cup’s debut converge on this island again. With its core spirit of “challenging oneself and persevering with resilience”, this event is expected to spark the growth of a distinctive, recognizable triathlon brand belonging to the Hainan Free Trade Port.
World-Class Athletes Assemble — International Stars Confirm Participation
Competition will kick off on March 21 with the elite races, which promise exceptional athletic performance. As of March 13, 103 high-level athletes from 24 countries and regions — including the UK, the US, France, Australia and more — have registered, many of whom currently rank among the world’s top 30. They will compete alongside China’s leading professional triathletes.
Li Yuanyuan, Deputy Director of the Hainan Sports Event Center, stated that to ensure fairness and safety, World Triathlon has assigned team leaders and technical delegates for full-process guidance. Nearly 30 senior judges from the China Triathlon Sports Association will officiate, while the organizing committee has recruited around 200 support personnel. Official accommodations, water-quality monitoring, anti-doping procedures and medical rescue measures have all been implemented in full compliance with international standards.
A Festival for All — Age-Group Athletes Chase Their Dreams
The event goes beyond professional competition and serves as a grand carnival for amateur triathletes. The age‑group races on March 22 will feature full-distance, half-distance, and duathlon categories, encompassing participants aged 16 to 75, covering all age groups from youth to seniors. A “Kids Triathlon” series will also be held to inspire young athletes.
Qin Jianqiu, Secretary-General of the China Triathlon Sports Association, shared that the Association has officially released the Implementation Guidelines for Standard Achieving Non‑Registered Athletes to Participate in National Competitive Triathlon Events. The guidelines clarify the pathway for non‑registered athletes to enter core competitive events. This means that both professional athletes and amateurs who meet the performance standards can step onto the professional stage. This year’s age-group competition offers an important opportunity for amateur elites to test their training results and strive for personal breakthroughs under the coconut-lined coastal course.
With preparations now in their final sprint, the stage is set.
This weekend, triathlon athletes from around the world will gather in Haikou. Let us look forward to a pinnacle test of physical endurance and mental fortitude — to feel the passion of triathlon, and to share in the youthful energy of the Free Trade Port!
