Stage 5, the Peak Sport Guide–Gonghe Stage, covered 136 kilometres and featured one Category 1 climb, one Category 3 climb, and three intermediate sprints. Although relatively short by Tour standards, the profile provided an ideal opportunity for aggressive racing from both the General Classification contenders and breakaway specialists.
Racing got underway in rainy conditions with temperatures around 17°C, as 127 riders rolled out from Guide.
A 10-rider breakaway formed shortly after the start, with SINSCHEK Nils (Li Ning Star) once again among the attackers after narrowly missing out the previous day. He was joined by teammate PELLAUD Simon, ALLENO Clement (Burgos Burpellet BH), NENCINI Tommaso (Solution Tech Nippo Rali), MCGEOUGH BREFFNI Cormac (7Eleven Cliqq Roadbike Philippines), BETTLES Alan Carter (Roojai Insurance Winspace) and four others. The escapees built an advantage of around two minutes before MCGEOUGH BREFFNI Cormac claimed maximum points at the first intermediate sprint.

The race changed dramatically on the first climb as XDS Astana Team set a fierce tempo at the front of the peloton. Green Jersey holder SALBY Alexander (Li Ning Star) was quickly dropped, while the early breakaway gradually disintegrated under the pressure. All of the escapees were caught before the summit of the Category 1 climb.
MULUEBERHAN Henok (XDS Astana Team) then launched a decisive attack. Yellow Jersey holder CASTELLON RIBALTA Jan, AGIRRE EGAÑA Jon, and CAICEDO CEPEDA Jonathan Klever were among the riders able to respond, forming an elite lead group. Following a series of accelerations on the climb, MULUEBERHAN Henokdistanced the Yellow Jersey and continued alone before being joined by teammate VAN BEKKUM Darren, giving XDS Astana Team a two-man move at the front. Behind them, a six-rider chase group containing CASTELLON RIBALTA Jan trailed by around 25 seconds. MULUEBERHAN Henok went on to take maximum points over both climbs as well as the second intermediate sprint.

As the race entered its second half, more riders bridged across to the chase group. CASTELLON RIBALTA Jan then attacked with three companions in an effort to close the gap to the leaders. With 40 kilometres remaining, the two leading groups came together, but the regrouping lasted only moments before BAGATIN Christian launched a powerful solo attack.
Five kilometres later, CAICEDO CEPEDA Jonathan Klever, who had started the day level on time with MULUEBERHAN Henok in the General Classification, attacked from the Yellow Jersey group and set off alone in pursuit of BAGATIN Christian. The Hungarian claimed maximum points at the final intermediate sprint, while CAICEDO CEPEDA Jonathan Klever finished second to collect valuable bonus seconds. Entering the final 10 kilometres, BAGATIN Christian still held an advantage of 50 seconds over the chasing riders.
After a determined 38-kilometre solo effort, BAGATIN Christian crossed the line alone to secure the biggest victory of his professional career. Behind him, CAICEDO CEPEDA Jonathan Klever successfully held off the Yellow Jersey group to finish second, earning enough time to reclaim the overall race lead as well as the Green Jersey.

Racing continues on July 16 with Stage 6 – China UnionPay Gonghe–Gangcha. Covering 233 kilometres, it is the longest stage of this year's Tour and features one Category 2 climb, one Category 3 climb, and four intermediate sprints. In addition to the endurance challenge, crosswinds around Qinghai Lake are expected to play a decisive role in the battle for both the stage victory and the General Classification.
