Lionel Taminiaux from Lotto Dstny won the first stage in 2024 Gree Tour of Guangxi World Tour Cycling Race in Fangchenggang city, Guangxi.

The 2024 Tour of Guangxi World Tour Cycling Race consists of six stages: Fangchenggang City Stage, Chongzuo-Jingxi Stage, Jingxi-Bama Stage, Bama-Jinchengjiang Stage, Yizhou-Nongla Scenic Area Stage, and Nanning City Stage. The race includes flat circuits, mountain loops, and uphill finishes, covering a total distance of 1021.8 kilometers. Participating teams include 16 UCI WorldTeams, 2 UCI ProTeams, and the Chinese National Team.

The 2024 Tour of Guangxi World Tour Cycling Race features a brand new route that skillfully integrates Guangxi's natural scenery and cultural landscapes, such as the coastal city's mountain and sea views, the enchanting Karst landscapes, the cultural features along the border, the red routes in the revolutionary old areas of the Left and Right Rivers, and the Bama international longevity and wellness tourist destination. This not only provides riders with a diverse riding experience but also showcases Guangxi's rich cultural and tourism resources to the world. The new route has reduced flat sections and increased mountain and hilly sections, offering more opportunities for climbers and enhancing the race's challenge and spectacle.

The first stage, the Fangchenggang City Stage, is an urban circuit stage with both the start and finish located at the Beibu Gulf Marine Culture Park. The single lap race distance is 38 kilometers, totaling 149.4 kilometers for four laps, with two intermediate sprint points set at 35.4 km and 111.4 km.

Fangchenggang City boasts rich "sea, border, and mountain" tourism resources, with unique attractions in coastal holiday tourism, China-Vietnam cross-border tourism, and forest hot spring wellness tourism. The distinctive "mountain-sea-border" tourism pattern stands out. Therefore, the highlight of this stage is the route, passing through the cityscape and the coastal and border scenery of the West Bay Sea area and the eastern section of the National Gate Avenue, which is rich in regional features.

In flat stages, there are always breakaways. Today's breakaway riders were No. 54 Stan Dewulf from the Decathlon AG2R team and No. 84 Rune Herregodts from the Intermarché-Wanty team. The two cooperated very well and even maintained a gap of about two and a half minutes from the peloton with just 20 km to the finish. As the race drew to a close, Rune Herregodts was gradually swallowed by the peloton, while Stan Dewulf persisted until he was caught back just 3 km from the finish.

In the last 3 km, various teams began to deploy their sprint trains in an orderly manner. As expected, the race culminated in a bunch sprint, with the main sprinters from each team jostling for the lead.

In the end, Lionel Taminiaux from the Lotto Soudal team narrowly won the stage and donned the GREE Red Leader's Jersey, also catching the Wanda Hotels & Resorts Blue Sprint Jersey.

Ethan Vernon from the Israel Startup Nation team, rider No. 167, wore the Li Ning White Jersey, representing the best young rider.

Stan Dewulf from the Decathlon AG2R team, rider No. 54, was awarded the Most Combative Rider of the stage due to his outstanding breakaway performance today.

Tomorrow will feature the second stage of the 2024 Tour of Guangxi, the Chongzuo-Jingxi Stage. The race covers a total distance of 181.5 kilometers, including two intermediate sprint and two Category 3 climbs. The difficulty gradually increases, making it highly anticipated.
